The Standard

Beyond a simple OCR match

Reading a document is not verifying an identity. Papertrail checks the government registry directly, matching face, demographic data, and document status in real time.

Aadhaar

Offline XML or OTP consent, matched against UIDAI's response for name, DOB and address.

PAN

Live NSDL lookup for status and the name it's registered under.

Passport

MRZ decoded and cross-checked against the issuing authority.

Voter ID

Checked against the Election Commission's electoral roll for the declared constituency.

Driving licence

Validated against the state transport record via VAHAN/Sarathi.

Live simulation

Watch each identifier get verified at source

Five registries, five different questions. Pick one to watch that specific lookup run — the identifier going in, the exchange with the source, and the record that comes back.

What a discrepancy looks like — next to what a clean pass looks like

Most cases close like the record on the right. The one on the left is a real failure mode, with the evidence attached exactly as an adjudicator would see it.

Escalated

Escalated to manual document review rather than auto-rejected. The candidate completed a live video KYC session and verified the PAN in person through NSDL's OTP consent flow. The case closed clear — the image capture method was the issue, not the document — with one extra day added to TAT.

How it runs

From consent to a routed decision

Three stages, the first two running for every candidate, the third only when something needs a human.

Phase 01

Consent and capture

Candidate consents and submits identifiers plus a live selfie from a mobile browser — no app install.

Phase 02

Cross-check and score

Every identifier is checked against its issuing database and matched against the others and the selfie.

Phase 03

Review and close

Anything below threshold routes to a trained analyst; everything else closes automatically.

FAQ

Identity check, answered

  • PAN is one of five identifiers, not a requirement. Aadhaar plus one other government identifier is enough to close the check — PAN is recommended, not mandatory, unless the role itself requires it for financial reasons.

  • Yes. Passport, driving licence or voter ID can anchor the check instead. The trade-off is turnaround: Aadhaar's offline XML and OTP route closes in minutes, while passport and voter ID routes involve a manual issuing-authority or registry cross-check.

  • It doesn't auto-fail. Anything below the confidence threshold routes to a trained analyst who compares the images directly. Most borderline cases are lighting or angle issues, not fraud, and close instantly.

  • Verification uses the offline XML or OTP-based route — Papertrail never stores the full Aadhaar number, only the masked identifier and the verification result, consistent with UIDAI's offline eKYC guidelines.

  • That routes to manual review rather than an automatic flag. The analyst requests supporting documentation, such as a marriage certificate, before deciding whether it's a genuine mismatch or an explainable difference.
